Custom Funkeys - The King by Lisa Bunescu
Today's custom Funkey is "The King" by Lisa Bunescu. No, not the Pineapple King but The King of Rock-n-Roll himself... Elvis! You've just GOT to love the hair and the mouth! There's been a lot of comments in the forum about the way so many of these customs from the show are bending over so far. I wonder if the blanks they painted on were a little thin at the neck. It seems as though the ones with extra "weight" added to the head (like the hair, glasses and mouth of this one) are the worst at the "lean"... Custom Funkeys - Puzzle by Olga and One is Loved by Natalie Repp
I'm adding two more Custom Funkeys this morning in an attempt to make up for missing yesterday's update. This whole collection of images from the Custom XL Funkeys Show is fun to look through and it's been tough trying to figure out which ones to show first! I need to speed up the process or it's going to take me until Spring to get them all up, so don't be surprised if you occasionally discover large additions at one time. For this morning we have "Puzzle" by Olga... ...and "One is Loved" by Natalie Repp... Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - Steampunk Willie by Pete
Today's custom Funkey is "Steampunk Willie" by Pete. I've loved the steampunk style customs made by various people for years, but the master has got to be Doktor A who's Mechtorians series was highlighted on the main site back in April. This custom made for the Custom XL Funkeys Show is a great play on the steampunk style mixed with "Steamboat Willie" (Mickey Mouse) and the Funkeys canvas... Custom Funkeys - Glitz & Glam by Jewdee
Cheese! Oh how I love you, let me count the ways... I love to eat you sliced. I love to eat you cut in cubes. I love to eat you shredded. I love you melted on my food. I love you with wine and chocolate. I love to wear you on my head while I watch my beloved Green Bay Packers... Oh, um... Next up is "Glitz & Glam" by Jewdee. As you can see, I was a little side tracked by the cheese. I just love the reflections in the eyes! Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - Swiss Funkey by Josephbek
Oh how the days fly by! I was hoping to keep up with at least one new custom Funkey on display each day, but I got excited those first few days and burned through the pages I had created so far. Now I'm back on track (hopefully) and will try to keep it to at least one new creation each day! The next up is "Swiss Funkey" by Josephbek. This is a fun take on the ol' Swiss Army Knife. It's a simple design, but a fun one to look at... Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - Cosmic Calamari Clutch by nomi
"Cosmic Calamari Clutch" by nomi is our next custom U.B.Funkey up for display. This is another example of a custom paint job that stuck with the basic Funkeys canvas. While some of the customs with added accessories and props are beautifully done, I still have a special affection for those that are able to create something this stunning with nothing more than paint... Custom Funkeys - Tourist from planet Shasta by DWStucke
The next custom to be highlighted is "Tourist from planet Shasta" by DWStucke. This one struck me because in a nostalgic way. I grew up camping and for many years we had a Shasta. Trust me, those colors are dead on... Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - Perestoikalopod by Rockanon
I know that I'm quickly going to run out of new ways to describe why I love these customs from the Custom XL Funkeys Show, so bear with me! Next up is "Perestoikalopod" by Rockanon. This is a great example of a custom that stuck to the basic Funkeys design with no extras added, just an imaginatively painted canvas... Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - RUN-BMC by Roman Cortez
The third custom to be introduced to the world is "RUN-BMC" by Roman Cortez. This custom Funkeys was part of the 2008 Custom XL Funkeys Show put on in L.A. by Mattel and MunkyKing. Though it breaks from the traditional Funkeys look with all the accessories and props, RUN-BMC has a wonderfully unique look to it. I'm likely drawn to some degree by the fact that I grew up listing to RUN-DMC in the mid-80's... Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, XL Funkeys
Custom Funkeys - KA-POW by Gil Galayet
From the 2008 Custom XL Funkeys Show comes our second highlighted custom U.B.Funkey, "KA-POW" by Gil Galayet. There are many that utilized props or very detailed painting in this show, but I love this entry because of how dynamic it is while staying simple in design... Custom Funkeys - Sweet but Deadly by Nicole
The first of MANY custom Funkeys to be introduced is "Sweet but Deadly" which comes to us from the Custom XL Funkeys Show that took place last month in L.A. Watch for new customs to be introduced likely daily for a while. There are tons of great customs to share! I decided to start with this one because it is just such a great piece of art... Sleepers Blog Posts More CustomXL Funkeys Images
I found a blog called "the Sleepers" yesterday that posted some more pics from the XL Custom Funkeys Show in LA. We're still waiting to get some more detailed shots from Funk-E, so here are a few more previews and a link to their post with more images...Labels: Art Show, Custom Funkeys, Mattel Children's Foundation, MunkyKing, XL Funkeys
Custom XL Funkeys Show in Two Days
There are two days left before the XL Custom Funkeys show opens in LA. There was a post on Vinyl Pulse yesterday giving some updated details and showing images of five of the customized XL Funkeys. The images are seen below, and I can't WAIT to see all the rest. The article says 100+ and from what I've heard it's close to 150 custom U.B.Funkeys! Also of note is the fact that there will be SDCC Exclusive Dot figures on hand and given out free to the first 50 people to the show. So if you live anywhere near LA and want a Dot, I suggest you go! XL Funkeys Custom Show Update
There really aren't any new details out there yet, but the MunkyKing site was updated to include the upcoming show set for September 26th. The page is pretty much a " holder page" right now, but promises more info soon. They did put together this snazzy little promo image... For those who didn't catch the earlier post about this show, there will be XL sized Funkeys, each hand-painted by various artists up for auction. The proceeds will go to The Mattel Children's Foundation.Labels: Art Show, Mattel, Mattel Children's Foundation, MunkyKing, XL Funkeys
XL Funkeys Custom Art Show
Mattel and MunkyKing are working together to put on a charity event in Los Angeles, CA for the Mattel Children's Foundation on Friday, September 26th. This event will be a custom art show featuring XL size Funkeys with original painted designs by various artists. I did inquire about the artists participating. All I know for sure is that it's not an open submission event and the artists have been predetermined already. As more information (and hopefully more images) become available, I'll be sure to share! Discuss!Labels: Art Show, Mattel, Mattel Childrens's Foundation, MunkyKing, XL Funkeys
